Gracious Drops

Dear Devonte:

When I saw a picture of you crying, my heart cried with you.

I feel sad when bad things happen to people. The bad things that happened in Ferguson and Portland happened because there are grown-ups who make a terrible mistake. It is a mistake that children don’t make. Only grown-ups make that mistake. They think that black and white people are not the same just because they come in different colors, like clothes.

Twelve-years-old is a good age to be because you are a child and a grown-up at the same time. When you gave Bret the free hug he asked for, you and he showed the whole world that life should not be as it is, but life as it should be.

Shakespeare called tears, “gracious drops.” Washington Irving said of them:

There is a sacredness in tears…they speak more eloquently than ten thousand tongues. They are a message of overwhelming grief…and of unspeakable love.

Your tears told us the same thing without words. Your “Free Hugs” are priceless. Your hugs will help make life as it should be.

Hugs,

Mario
